This is my last semester of the Education Specialist Internship Program at Chico State! I currently teach the Autism Preschool for Tehama County.
My classroom is very structured and very routine, which is what my students need and how they learn best. We use Discrete Trial Teaching to teach our students new skills, and work on generalizing skills once those skills have been mastered during one-on-one time. We have small group instruction where we teach turn taking skills, appropriate non-verbal communication skills, social commenting and question answering skills, and following directions in a group.
We have a great location and are right across the hall from a State Preschool. This allows us to include our students in the general education classroom and to be able to have typically developing peers to interact with on a daily basis.
I have also be able to be involved in some assessments of the new referrals we receive at the county office throughout the school year, which has allowed me to learn more about assessments in general.
